Remember tape backup? For some SMBs who have moved on, this form of data backup is a clunky and frustrating relic of the past. ## The Limits of Tape Backup
Tape backup was a staple in business continuity for ages, but it’s shown its cracks in recent years.

This process is time-consuming and prone to user error, and while it’s meant to support business continuity, tape backup makes it unpredictable at best. Furthermore, restoring data is a lengthy process, taking hours or even full days.

While tape requires manual setup and timely (costly) recovery, BDR prioritizes speed and efficiency, making it a vastly better solution for SMBs.
Backups with tape have to take place at the end of the day due to how resource-intensive they can be. In contrast, instead of taking backups only once per day, BDR systems take multiple snapshots of your data as frequently as every 15 minutes, meaning data loss is kept to a minimum. Your systems can simply restore from a point in time before a data loss incident occurred.
This type of backup is essential, as in business, loss of data means loss of operations, and when your business isn’t functioning the way it should… well, it gets ugly, and fast.
## Automation and Off-Site Protection
The best part of BDR is that it can do all of this automatically without human intervention.
Tape backups require manual rotation and off-site storage, which takes up both time and physical space. While you’re transporting tapes off-site, you run the risk of damage during transport. BDR’s automation eliminates this risk, as backups occur automatically and are then stored in the cloud for ease of access and security.
